How to Dress Skinnier After Baby

by Kim Arrington Johnson

You know, sometimes those last few pounds of baby weight are just hard to take off. So we need all the help we can get! Drumroll…bring on the tips and tricks for dressing skinnier after baby.

Give me a V for V-Necks.

Show some skin up top. A long V-shape will draw eyes up and away from your midsection, butt, and thighs. V-necks, such as camisoles, sweaters, dresses, cardigans, and tees, are your postpartum friends.

Stick with a single hue.

You don’t have to go into mourning wearing all black after baby. Charcoal grey, chocolate brown, and midnight blue can slim your frame, too. Wearing a single color or similar tones with flattering accessories up top can elongate your body.

If you are going to wear stripes, go vertical.

The optics are simple. Horizontal stripes can make us look wider, while vertical stripes are slimming. Pair a black shirt with a long, vertical striped pant for a slimmer you.

Wear simple dark jeans.

Wear simple dark jeans in a straight leg for average body types, or boot cut styles for curvier, pear-shaped figures. Avoid chunky pocket embellishments and low riders. Avoid white or light-wash jeans, if desired, which can make your thighs look thicker.

Bring on the accessories.

Long necklaces can create a narrow line in the center of your body away from hips, while a colorful purse can keep you from looking like a cat burglar in your favorite all-black ensemble. A vibrant scarf may be just what you need at work to conceal a bounteous bust line.

Define Your Waist

Even if you haven’t even remotely returned to your pre-pregnancy measurements, define your waist. It will help maintain an hourglass silhouette, which is much more flattering than sporting a bulky or baggy look (which makes you look heavier.)

Support the girls properly.

A too tight bra draws attention to back fat. And want to pack on the pounds instantly? Try wearing an ill-fitting bra that pushes your breasts together like two rising Panera Bread loaves, adding extra weight up front. If you are breastfeeding, look for cleavage-reducing styles that will not constrict milk production.

Match your shoe color to your leg.

In winter, pair black, opaque tights with black boots, or pumps. In summer, wear a beige or nude skin-tone pump or sandal. With jeans, find a dark or denim-colored shoe to extend your leg line.

Wear heels and pointed toe shoes.

Heels push your feet up and off the floor, making you appear taller and your legs longer. A pointed toe creates the same illusion, elongating the line from thigh to toe. Rounded or squared toes make your legs look stumpy.

Wear your hair up.

Up-dos slim the face and accentuate the neckline. Shoulder-length hair can add the look of weight, or bulk, squaring out the face.

Baggy is not better.

Properly fitting clothing is essential. Extra material adds bulk. If you have plateaued with losing baby weight, do not sit around waiting to fit back into your old jeans. Buy clothes that fit you now and make you feel good about yourself.
